The Outback settlers

Début août, lors d'une journée de repos, nous sommes partis avec Kate sur les traces de ses ancêtres. J'ai tenté de trouver une carte sur Google Image ou même réussir à situer où nous sommes partis sur Google Map, mais impossible c'était vraiment au milieu de rien.

Kate, habituée, roulait vite en 4x4. Nous avons roulé environ 1h30 sur la Plenty Highway en direction de Boulia, à un moment la route n'était même plus goudronnée! Kate nous a dit que le Gouvernement devait débourser des fortunes pour quelques kilomètres donc cela avance lentement.

At the beginning of august, it was a resting day when we left with Kate in the footsteps of her ancestors. I tried to find a map on Google Image or even manage to locate where we went on Google Map, but impossible, it was really in the middle of nowhere.

Kate, used to it, was driving fast in her 4x4. We drove about 1h30 on the Plenty Highway towards Boulia, at one point the road was not even sealed! Kate told us that the government had to pay fortunes for a few kilometers so it is building slowly.

Sur le chemin, nous avons visité rapidement en voiture Atitjere, ("atitjéra"), la . communauté de Raymond et Marie, le couple de peintres avec qui on travaillait.
Il était encore tôt et à part quelques chiens errants, personne n'était sorti. Kate nous expliquait qu'à cause de l'argent donné par l'Etat, la plupart des Aborigènes ne travaille pas et se lève tard.
Cela faisait bizarre de voir toutes ces maisons regroupées, avec des terrains à l'abandon, des voitures déglinguées, une épicerie (où "tout est cher"), un centre médical et un accueil pour les enfants avec des animateurs (tous ces professionnels sont sélectionnés et envoyés par le gouvernement).

On the way, we quickly visited by car Atitjere, ("Atitjera"), the. community of Raymond and Marie, the couple of painters with whom we worked.
It was still early and apart from a few stray dogs, nobody was out. Kate explained that because of the money given by the Country, most Aborigines do not work and get up late.
It was weird to see all these houses together, with derelict grounds, rundown cars, a grocery store (where "everything is expensive"), a medical center and a kid centre with trainers (all these professionals are selected and sent by the government).

Et là, quasi arrivés à destination, sur qui on tombe? Victoria! notre amie allemande qui récoltait des oranges avec son copain Seb quand on était à IMPI quasiment un an plus tôt!! Le monde est petit même au fin fond de l'Australie! Au milieu de rien, nous étions "voisins" (à 150km près, bienvenue dans l'Outback ^^). Ils travaillent donc sur une des terres des ancêtres de Kate, c'est une terre avec des vaches + une supérette/snacking que gère très bien Victoria. Hélas Seb travaillait avec les vaches donc on n'a pas pu le voir. Nous les reverrons tous les 2 à Alice Springs (cf article du 15 août).

And there, nearly arrived, guess who we found? Victoria! Our German friend who was picking oranges with her boyfriend Seb when we were at IMPI almost a year ago !! The world is small even in the middle of Australia! In the middle of nowhere, we were "neighbors" (150km away, welcome to the Outback ^^). So they work on a land that used to belong by Kate's ancestors, it is a land with cows + a supermarket / snacking very well managed by Victoria. Unfortunately, Seb was working with the cows so we could not see him. We will see them both at Alice Springs (see article August 15).

Retour à notre histoire de colon: en 1921, l'arrière grand-père de Kate, C.O. Chalmers, décida de quitter la côte Est avec femme et enfant dans une roulotte avec chevaux et un troupeau de vache (ou de chèvres je ne sais plus). C'était extrêmement rare de voyager vers l'intérieur des terres à cette époque car il n'y avait RIEN (moins qu'aujourd'hui!). Il alla vers l'ouest vers Boulia, et à cause de la sécheresse, ils s'arrêtèrent 2 ans! Puis ils reprirent leur route avant de s'installer. Ils apprirent la langue des Aborigènes locaux qui les aidaient en échange de nourriture.

Back to our settler story: in 1921, Kate's great-grandfather, C.O. Chalmers, decided to leave the east coast with wife and children in a trailer with horses and a herd of cow (or goats I do not remember anymore). It was extremely rare to travel inland at this time because there was NOTHING (less than today!). He went west towards Boulia, and because of the drought, they stopped 2 years! Then they kept going their journey before settling down. They learned the language of local Aboriginals who helped them in exchange for food.

leur ancienne propriété est devenue une réserve de conservation, on peut y rouler, bivouaquer, visiter. / their former land has become a conservation reserve, we can drive, camp, visit.

ils sont maintenant enterrés à Tower Rock, un magnifique ensemble de rochers rouges empilés qui forment une colline / they are now burried at Tower Rock, a beautiful red rock place that create a hill
