AUSTRALIA DAY

Ici la fête nationale c'est le 26 Janvier, jour où la Première Flotte Britannique a mis le pied en 1788 sur le territoire Australien et l'a déclaré colonie Britannique. C'est une journée assez contestée car de nombreux pro-aborigènes et Aborigènes l'appellent le Shame Day (jour de la honte) ou Invasion Day. En effet, après l'installation des Britanniques, ce fut en gros le début de l'extinction de la plupart des tribus Aborigènes, d'une part à cause de maladies européennes importées (comme la rougeole, la variole ou la tuberculose) mais aussi avec l'appropriation des terres et de l'eau.

Bref, il y a d'une part plein de fêtes, de barbecues (BBQ!!), de parades et de feux d'artifices; et de l'autre, de nombreuses contestations, manifestations, conférences politiques... Par exemple notre coloc John n'en est pas du tout fier et dit que ce fut le début d'une tuerie, tout simplement. En même temps, il est très proche des Aborigènes car il fut éduqué par un Ancien qui l'initia à la médecine du bush, il passa aussi 3 mois dans un camp Aborigène à soigner les malades, et il a l'air d'en être encore traumatisé (il m'a parlé de nombreux suicides et de problèmes d'alcool...).

Mais cette journée fut quand même joyeuse rassurez-vous! ^^ Nos colocs avait invité leur famille et amis à manger le midi donc ce fut riche de rencontres!

Here the national day is the 26th of January, the day when the First British Fleet set foot in 1788 on the Australian territory and declared it British colony. This is a fairly contested day because many pro-Aboriginales and Aboriginales themselves call it Shame Day or Invasion Day. After the installation of the British, this was the beginning of the extinction of most Aboriginale tribes, first because of imported European diseases (such as measles, smallpox or tuberculosis) but also with the appropriation of land and water.

In short, in one hand there are plenty of parties, barbecues (BBQ !!), parades and fireworks; and on the other hand, numerous protests, demonstrations, political conferences ... For example, our housemate John is not at all proud of this day and says that this was the beginning of a massacre, quite simply. But he is very close to the Aboriginales because he was educated by an Elder who introduced him to bush medicine, he also spent 3 months in an aboriginal camp to treat sick people, and he seems still traumatized (he told me about many suicides and alcohol problems...).

But that day was still cheerful! ^^ Our housemates had invited their family and friends for lunch so it was rich of meetings!

On a fait notre premier barbecue! Grosse tradition ici. On est invité à un autre ce samedi par nos anciens hôtes d'ailleurs :)
Et on a enfin bu un bon vin Australien, "Tamburlaine", rouge, mélange de cabernet et merlot (ils sont très mélange de cépages ici).
Il y avait le père de notre coloc Loz qui était là et qui a adoré parlé français avec nous ^^ il revenait tout juste de France car il s'occupe de la vente et de l'exportation en Australie des vins d'un vignoble du côté de Bordeaux.

Sinon les garçons avaient passé deux jours à construire une clôture pour les poules histoire de pouvoir profiter nous aussi d'une partie du jardin et de la terrasse. John a eu la super idée d'y incorporer un filet de badminton, comme ça on peut jouer dans le jardin! :D

We had our first BBQ! Big tradition here. We are invited to another next Saturday by our former hosts :)
And we finally drank a good Australian wine, "Tamburlaine", red, blend of cabernet and merlot (they are very into mixed grape varieties here).
There was the father of our housemate Loz who loved speaking French with us ^^ he had just returned from France because he deals with the sale and export in Australia of the wines of a vineyard next to Bordeaux.

Otherwise the boys had spent two days building a fence for the chickens so we can also enjoy staying in the garden and on the terrace. John had the great idea to incorporate a net of badminton, so we can play in the garden! :D

(bon y en a juste un qui doit jouer "côté poules" donc faut faire attention de pas shooter dedans..)

Et on a passé le reste de l'après midi en mode concert improvisé avec de la flûte, de la guitare, de l'harmonium, du cajon ou encore du violon :)

And we spent the rest of the afternoon doing a jam with flute, guitar, harmonium, cajon or violin :)

Je n'ai pas osé prendre en détails les looks de certains invités mais c'était très patriotique: des stickers drapeau australien collés sur les joues, le fard assortis, et bizarrement ici soit on revêt le drapeau (bleu blanc rouge ;) ), soit on s'habille en jaune et vert, comme pour les supporters sportifs (j'ai eu mon exlication: le mimosa doré que l'on trouve partout est vert et or/jaune et fait partie des symboles Australiens!).

I did not dare taking photos of the details of the looks of some guests but it was very patriotic: Australian flag stuck glued to the cheeks, the assorted makeup, and strangely people wear the flag's colours (blue white red ;), or yellow and green, as for sports fans (I had my explanation: the golden mimosa that is found everywhere is green and gold/yellow and is part of the Australian symbols!).

Yeah!! Grosse ambiance. Bon nous dommage, le soir il a plu donc nous ne sommes pas allés voir le feu d'artifice :(

Pour finir sur une note gourmande (haha on dirait un magazine féminin ^^'), on a découvert une spécialité pâtissière australienne: le lamington. C'est un biscuit éponge enrobé de chocolat et de copeaux de coco, pas mal :)

Yeah !! Great atmosphere. Well it was a shame because it rained all the evening so we did not go to see the fireworks :(

To finish on a gourmet note (haha it sounds like a girly magazine ^^'), we discovered an Australian pastry specialty: the lamington. It is a sponge biscuit coated with chocolate and coco chips, not bad :)
